Welcome to The Newfoundland Chocolate Company

We're Hiring!

The Newfoundland Chocolate Company is Atlantic Canada’s premier gourmet chocolate company.  We make amazing chocolate and we’re proud to employ equally amazing people.  Imagine one day sitting with your grandchild on your knee and them saying with wide eyed wonder, ‘really Grandpa/Grandma, you really worked at the chocolate factory?!”  We’re hiring for the following three positions:

Retail Manager:

The Newfoundland Chocolate Company’s Chocolaterie on Duckworth Street is one of the finest and most unique retail showrooms in the region.  We are seeking a retail professional with at least five years experience, including management experience.  If you are the right person for this position, you are a lover of fine chocolate, most particularly Newfoundland Chocolate Company chocolate!  You have a desire to learn and become an expert on all things chocolate.  You have experience creating breathtaking retail displays and window displays.  You are a customer service magician and you have experience in the design and implementation of both in-store and on-line customer appreciation programs.  You are creative and artistic and are full of unique and fun ideas for promoting the finest chocolate in Atlantic Canada.  You have a strong sales background, you are great with people, you are friendly, energetic and have a great attitude.  You like to work hard, feel pride in your work and have fun while doing it.  You can lead a small team of wonderful retail staff.  This is a full time position with some evening and weekend work required.  Salary is negotiable.

Oompa Loompa Handyman (or Handywoman!):

If you’re the right person for the Oompa Loompa Handyperson at the Newfoundland Chocolate Company, you’re handy (obviously).  You can fix things.  The idea of keeping a chocolate waterfall going 24/7 365 days a year gives you a charge.  You take pride in keeping systems working smoothly.  You like machines and gadgets and knowing how things work.  You can fix holes in drywall and paint and you can build things.  You have a healthy dose of MacGyver in you.  Your job is to maintain things so they don’t break but fix them when they do.  You get along well with others, you like to work hard but you like to have fun in the process.  You have a positive attitude and a cheerful disposition.  Wage is negotiable.  Hours approximately 20 per week.  This job can be combined with the Shiner and Polisher position for the right person.

Oompa Loompa Shiner and Polisher:

If you’re the right person to the Newfoundland Chocolate Company’s Shiner and Polisher you LOVE to clean.  You love order and love making things shine.  Chocolate making is a lovely, wonderful but messy business.  Chocolate gets everywhere… on the counters, on the floor, on the walls, sometimes on the ceiling!  Seriously, our chocolatiers are awesome but boy can they ever make a mess!  You don’t see this as an unpleasant chore. You see this as an opportunity to do what you do best – clean, polish, sanitize and put things back in order, leaving everything spic and span until the chocolatiers work their chocolate magic the next morning and … we start all over again!  You’re a hard worker, a fast cleaner and you have an eye for detail.  You know you can take pride in this job.  You have a great attitude, you’re fun and you like people.  If this sounds like the job for you, we’d love to hear from you.  Approximately 20 hours per week.  Wage negotiable.  Can be combined with the handyperson position for the right candidate.

Applications are invited by e-mail info@newfoundlandchocolatecompany.com by Monday, February 27, 2012.  Please include a cover letter, resume and three references.  Please indicate in the subject line the position(s) for which you are applying.  Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Open ... and simply decadent.

It's official ... the Newfoundland Chocolate Company's new Chocolaterie at 166 Duckworth is open!  We're in the eye-catching building across from the Sir Humphrey Gilbert Building ... it's the caramel-coloured one with the chocolate dripping from the eaves and window ledges!  (Pictured left: St. John's Mayor Dennis O'Keefe chews through the chocolate ribbon at the official opening.)

The Chocolaterie is truly a sight to behold. Before entering, linger a few minutes under the shelter of our delicious looking awning so that you can take in the window display ... you'll find nothing else like it in the province. Once you step inside, you're likely to "oooh" and "aaah" when you see what awaits you. There are a few features that defy description ... you just have to see them for yourself.

Of course you'll find our famous Newfoundland Chocolate Company chocolate boxes and bars, available on their own, or beautifully bundled into gift sets and baskets. You'll want to check out the gourmet truffles, clusters and bark behind the glass ... you'll marvel at the mouth-watering flavour combinations our chocolatiers have created. There's something for every taste.

Please accept our invitation to drop by for a visit and taste our sample of the day. Our hours are Monday through Wednesday 10am to 6pm, Thursday and Friday 10am to 8pm, Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm.

Our chocolate is also carried by a number of other fine retailers.  Visit our Where to Buy page for a full listing.

What makes Newfoundland Chocolate Company chocolates so special?

First, you’ll not find a group of chocolatiers more passionate about great chocolate.  We only use the very finest of Belgian, Swiss and French gourmet couverture chocolate made from only the very finest of cocoa beans.  Our chocolates are pure and free of additives and preservatives – so they are best enjoyed before the date indicated (although we have a hunch they’ll have disappeared long before then!)

Second, every chocolate we make is created by hand, lovingly and passionately, by our skilled, artisan chocolatiers.  As such, every chocolate in every box is unique – as unique as the people, places, culture and landscape of this wonderful, beautiful Newfoundland and Labrador which we call home.

Third, we believe that truly great chocolate is pure and should be celebrated, tasted fully and naturally and never be masked with sweet, overpowering centres.  We strive to find complementary blends of chocolate with fine, natural ingredients.  Each boxed series features a different array of our favourite combinations of our finest milk, dark and white chocolates with nuts, caramels, locally roasted coffees, home made biscotti and what are inarguably the finest berries to be found anywhere – our own natural Newfoundland and Labrador wild berries.

If you are a returning customer, thank you for giving us an opportunity to share our passion for exceptional chocolate with you.  If you have not yet discovered Newfoundland Chocolate, please do – you will not be disappointed.  We hope you will savour and enjoy our chocolates as thoroughly as we enjoyed making them for you.

Sincerely,

Brent Smith

Introducing the Newfoundland Chocolate Academy!

The Newfoundland Chocolate Company is pleased to announce our new Chocolate Making Workshops, to be held at our Chocolaterie at 166 Duckworth Street.  These fun, three hour evening workshops will teach budding chocolatiers the basics of chocolate making.  Students will make their own box of assorted chocolates which will be theirs to keep.  You'll learn about the history of chocolate; cacao to cocoa - from bean to bar; how chocolate is made; tempering chocolate; ganache; and moulding chocolates.  This workshop is for anyone! You don't need to be a baker, a pastry chef or a chocolatier. It's for anyone who loves gourmet chocolate, who would love to learn how great chocolate is made and who loves the idea of making their own chocolates and truffles.  The next available session is Thursday, December 8, 2011. Call Yvonne at 709.579.0099 for information or to register.  Cost is $75 per person and class size is limited to 15 people.
